Kevin Lahey, Master Level Clinical Intern

Kevin is currently finishing up his Masters of Social Work through the University of Iowa, and is excited to be returning to Owens & Associates Counseling & Therapy as a clinical intern. Kevin aims to meet each and every client where they’re at, work at a pace that works for them, and do so with empathy, understanding, and humor (when appropriate). Kevin believes that in order to fully understand someone, it’s important to look at more than just the person, taking time to examine the systems they operate both in and around.

Kevin aims to take a person-centered approach with everyone he sees but is open to drawing on many different approaches in order to fit the needs of his clients. Therapy, to Kevin, isn’t about listening to a therapist talk for an hour and isn’t about the client speaking to a blank slate for that same amount of time. Therapy is collaborative, and the best results come about when the client and the therapist work together as a team. He also loves to incorporate music when possible and is more than open to jamming out those difficult emotions, so long as things don’t get too loud.

He has a particular interest in working with teens and young adults experiencing anxiety, depression, grief and OCD, but even if you don’t fall under that umbrella, Kevin is more than willing to work with anyone. Kevin prides himself on being accepting of everyone regardless of identity, beliefs, or orientations. When it comes down to it, we’re all human beings trying our best to make it through life, and Kevin is more than willing to help make that process a bit easier if he can.

In his free time, Kevin enjoys writing and playing music (the heavier the better), gaming (videogames or tabletop, it depends on the day), reading and spending time with his fiancé and two dogs.

Kevin is currently accepting new clients at the Lake in the Hills and Schaumburg locations. He can be reached at: klahey@owenscounseling.com.
