Balancing Productivity and Rest this Fall

By: Rachel King, Master Level Clinical Intern

Fall is by far my favorite season, with pumpkin patches, outdoor markets, football games, crisp evenings, and the start of the holiday festivities. But it’s also a time when school is back in full swing, work deadlines pile up, and holiday stress begins to creep in. Many of us feel the pressure to “do it all.” With so much happening, rest and self-care often get pushed to the back burner.

We live in a world of hustle, where rest is often mistaken for laziness. But in reality, choosing rest takes courage. It takes intention to slow down, set boundaries, and give yourself permission to recharge — and that choice can make all the difference. As Eleanor Brown reminds us:

“Rest and self-care are so important. When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve others from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel.”

Balancing productivity and rest isn’t just a nice idea.  It’s essential for protecting our physical health, emotional well-being, and relationships during this busy time of year. When rest is neglected, our mind and body pay the price.

  • Emotionally, we become more irritable and reactive, which can strain relationships and make everyday stress harder to manage.
  • Mentally, chronic lack of sleep makes it more difficult to regulate emotions, increasing the risk of anxiety and depression.
  • Physically, our immune system suffers and we are more vulnerable to getting sick.

Rest isn’t optional — it’s the foundation for showing up as our best selves. Without it, even the joys of Fall can feel overwhelming.  Prioritizing rest has powerful benefits.

  • We’re more fully present in our day-to-day lives.
  • We make better decisions because we’re not reacting impulsively but taking the time to pause and think.
  • Our relationships improve when we’re more patient and emotionally available. ● Regular sleep strengthens the immune system and lowers the risk of illness.

Far from being lazy, rest actually fuels productivity and helps us thrive.  Balancing rest doesn’t mean abandoning productivity.  It means being strategic with your energy and time.

Here are a few ways to stay productive without burning out:

  • Set realistic deadlines. If someone else is delegating tasks, ask for the time you need.
  • Break down projects into smaller steps. Use whatever system works for you to keep tasks organized.
  • Focus on one task at a time. Multitasking often leaves us drained.

Making space for rest doesn’t have to mean a full vacation (though those help, too). Small, intentional steps go a long way.

Practical ways to get more rest this Fall:

  • Sleep routines: Set a bedtime reminder and aim for 7–9 hours of sleep each night. Use “Do Not Disturb” on your phone to limit interruptions.
  • Daily reflection: Spend a few minutes in the morning or evening focusing on peace or gratitude.
  • Boundaries: Remember that “no” is not a dirty word. Even fun fall festivities can become exhausting if you overcommit.
  • Take real breaks: Build in a lunch break — and if you finish eating early, use the rest of the time to rest.
  • Accountability: Ask a partner, friend, or family member to check in on your rest goals.

As you move through this busy Fall season, remember that making time for rest doesn’t mean you’re being lazy or avoiding responsibility.  It means you’re giving yourself the strength and balance you need to show up fully — for yourself, for your work, and for the people you love.  Give yourself permission to embrace both productivity and rest.  The balance will help you not just get through Fall, but actually enjoy it.
