Finding Life’s Rhythm: The Quest for Balance in Life

Written by Krista Mueller, LCPC, LPC, NCC

Take a moment to think of how many roles you take on in life. Student? Partner? Friend? Parent? Child/teenager? Employee? Leader? Member of a specific community? Chances are it’s a countless number of roles, some of which you may have not even acknowledged. So, how do you balance all of that?

Life’s balance is something most of us have or will struggle with at some point in life and it is something that is often worked on in therapy, as it is difficult to decide what level of priority to give different areas of your life. Plus, then you account for other people in your life, and sometimes people pleasing tendencies come in to play and our balance in life turns into being based off what someone else wants and not what you want. Life being out of balance is wacky and can lead to a great deal of unhappiness.

Understanding Balance

Balance isn’t about perfection or an equal split of time and energy across all aspects of life. Instead, it’s about creating harmony between different areas, ensuring that no single aspect dominates while others suffer. It means recognizing your priorities, setting boundaries, and making intentional choices that serve your overall well-being. Never will all areas of life be balanced in equal parts!

Everyone has different areas of life to balance. Major ones for most are: a job/career, education, family, relationships, finances, religion, hobbies, a specific community, etc.

Ways to Gain Balance

Setting Boundaries – A major factor in feeling out of balance is the inability to set boundaries. Whether it’s at work, in friendships, or within family dynamics, setting clear and healthy boundaries ensures that you don’t overextend yourself. Learning to say “no” when necessary and communicating your needs effectively can prevent burnout and improve your overall happiness.

Self-Care – One of the key elements in maintaining balance is self-care. Often mistaken for indulgence, self-care is about attending to your physical, emotional, and mental health. This can include simple acts such as getting enough sleep, exercising, eating nourishing foods, and practicing mindfulness or meditation. Taking time for yourself replenishes your energy and enhances your ability to manage stress.

Embracing Flexibility – Life is unpredictable, and rigid expectations can lead to disappointment and stress. Embracing flexibility allows you to adapt to changes without feeling overwhelmed. Rather than striving for a perfect routine, focus on developing habits and strategies that can be adjusted as needed. This mindset shift reduces anxiety and promotes a sense of control over your life.

Finding Joy in the Present – Many of us spend so much time worrying about the future or dwelling on the past that we forget to appreciate the present. Practicing gratitude and engaging in activities that bring joy can enhance mental well-being. Whether it’s spending time with loved ones, engaging in a hobby, or simply enjoying a quiet moment, these small joys contribute to a balanced and fulfilling life.

Seeking Support When Needed – Balance doesn’t mean handling everything alone. Seeking support—whether from friends, family, or professionals—can provide guidance and reassurance. Therapy, support groups, or even meaningful conversations with loved ones can offer new perspectives and help you manage stress more effectively.

Time Management – List and prioritize tasks, such as labeling them as urgent, not urgent, delegate, and get rid of/if extra time. Use alarms/reminders or a planner to structure your day. Avoid multitasking—focus on one thing at a time for better efficiency.

Nurture Relationships – Schedule time for family and friends, even in small ways (getting together, a phone call, Facetiming, etc.). Practice active listening and be present in conversations.

Engage in Personal Growth – Read, learn new skills, or pursue hobbies that bring joy. Practice self-reflection and mindfulness to stay grounded.

Practice Stress Management – Incorporate meditation, journaling, being active, or deep breathing into your routine. Spend time in nature or engage in activities that relax you. Reach out to friends and family for support.

Activity About Balance

If you are not quite sure how to even begin to think about where your level of balance in life is, here’s one activity for you! When discussing balance, often something I ask people to do is complete a Wheel of Life (see the picture in this blog). This is a pie chart (wheel) that lists different major areas of life and asks you to rate your level of satisfaction in each section on a scale of 1 (least satisfied) – 10 (most satisfied). First step is to think of how you would define each category. For example, one may define the family section as parents and siblings and another person may define it as their significant other and children. Second step, rate each section’s level of satisfaction for you with keeping in mind how you define satisfied. some questions to ask yourself to determine satisfaction level could be: “Could I use more or less of this area? Could this area be better? Is there someone or something in this area I could benefit from adding or removing?”

Take a step back, look at your wheel, and determine which areas you deem need improvement.

Keep in mind that the goal is not always to be at 100% satisfaction in every section AND that your definition of 100% will be different than the next persons. This is where the key words of YOUR BALANCE comes in, as only you can determine what that balance looks like for you!

You can search online for a Wheel of Life, as there are many versions of different areas of life or use some creativity to create your own!
