From Chaos to Calm: Restoring Inner Peace After a Busy Season
By: Krista Mueller, LCPC
It’s time to breathe! The last few months of the year easily become chaotic – multiple holidays, numerous family members to see, events to attend, events to host, endless planning, gift shopping, end of the year tasks, schoolwork, regular work, the weather being indecisive & changing and probably more- it’s easy to become overwhelmed and shut down in some way. We push through, run on autopilot, tell ourselves “I just have to do one more thing” a million times, and promise ourselves that once things slow down, we’ll finally rest. Often though, when the dust settles, many people find that peace doesn’t just appear—it must be restored.
Busy seasons can take a toll on our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Good news though! Below are some simple and mindful ways to reconnect and rebuild a sense of inner calm.
If you notice yourself experiencing:
- Fatigue or burnout
- Difficulty focusing
- Irritability
- Trouble sleeping or sleeping more than usual
- Isolation
Your mind and body are signaling that they need time—real time—to recover. These mindful methods could be for you!
Small Shifts to Reclaim Your Calm
You don’t have to do a complete life overhaul to reset. Here are a few gentle ways to regain balance:
Reintroduce Rest
Sleep! Carve out some downtime in low lighting. This first one may not surprise you, but recovery can’t happen without it. A broken leg won’t heal well if you don’t stop walking on it!
Reconnect With Your Body
Grounding practices – what does that mean? It can be something like meditation, stretching, yoga, art, a craft, dancing, a walk, mindful breathing, muscle relaxation, treating yourself to a massage, etc. Even something like cooking your favorite meal or baking a favorite treat!
Ease Back Into Routines
With the holidays, gatherings, events, and days off, you may not have been in your typical routine, or it has completely changed. Reflect on what your routine used to be or establish a new one! Write it out, edit it in your calendar, set alarms to follow – whatever helps you best to help ease into a more consistent routine.
Let Yourself Feel
Stand in the mirror, sit in your comfiest spot, close your eyes, which ever you prefer, and ask yourself “what am I feeling?” Check in on emotions and physical feelings. You can also journal, chat with a friend, or meet with a professional counselor/therapist to process all that may have come up lately, including gaining awareness to emotions and feelings you may have looked past or not recognized!
Remember: You are allowed to slow down.
