Refocus, Recharge, Refine: Setting SMART Goals for the Months Ahead
By Cydnei Quinn, Master Level Clinical Intern
Happy spring, everyone! 🌷Springtime has always been one of my favorite seasons, for so many reasons. The sun starts to shine again, flowers begin to bloom, and the trees slowly come back to life. There’s something refreshing about this time of year—it feels like a natural reset.
One of my favorite spring traditions is taking time to clean, reorganize, and reflect on my priorities. It’s a chance to set myself up for the months ahead with a clearer mind and a stronger sense of direction. Preparing for the future in this way can really help create a less stressful, more manageable year—and make challenges feel a little easier to handle when they come up.
One goal-setting technique that can be helpful during this time is called “S.M.A.R.T goals.” It’s a simple but effective way to bring clarity to what you want to achieve and how you’ll get there. SMART goals can be used in almost any situation where you’re working toward something meaningful. The acronym stands for:
(S) Specific: What will be accomplished?
(M) Measurable: What data will measure your goal?
(A) Achievable: Is the goal doable?
(R) Relevant: How does the goal align with your broader goals?
(T) Time-bound: What is the timeline for accomplishing this goal?
As you think through these, it’s helpful to pause and really respond to each question. These questions can provide such benefit as they can guide you in understanding your goal(s) more clearly, as well as help identify your approach, and recognize when you’ve achieved success.
Here’s an example of a SMART goal in action!
Instead of stating “I want to read more books,” when that does not include the plan of action, how many, or when, try this:
Specific: I will read one book a month for one year.
Measurable: I will log each book I finish on the last day of the month.
Achievable: I will break the book into manageable sections so I can make steady progress. I can also build a habit of reading every night before bed.
Relevant: Reading will expand my knowledge, improve my comprehension, and give me a meaningful break from screens like my phone or TV.
Time-bound: The timeframe is one year.
Tips on creating a SMART goal
Create a goal you look forward to completing
If your goals bring you closer to who you want to be, strengthen your relationships, or support a future that feels fulfilling, you’re much more likely to stick with them. Enjoying the process makes all the difference.
Choose timelines that are realistic
SMART goals can be short-term or long-term, but balance is key. Setting timelines that are too tight can feel overwhelming and discouraging, while timelines that are too loose can make it easy to lose focus. A helpful question to ask yourself is: What is the most realistic timeframe for me to complete this goal?
Reach out to others
If you’re having trouble getting started, consider reaching out to friends or loved ones. Having someone to keep you accountable, or even join you, can boost motivation and make the experience more meaningful. Sometimes, the journey becomes just as rewarding as the goal itself.
