Strength in Numbers — The Power of Group Therapy

By: McKenna Worline, Master Level Clinical Intern

When we think of therapy, we often picture a quiet one-on-one conversation with a counselor in a private office. There’s another powerful and often under-appreciated form of therapy — one that offers something uniquely healing. That is group therapy.

In group therapy, a small number of individuals — oftentimes facing similar emotional or psychological challenges — come together under the guidance of a trained therapist to share their stories, offer support to others, and grow alongside one another. At first, the idea of disclosing in front of strangers can feel intimidating. For many, the group becomes a safe spot — a space where connections can replace isolation and where learning and healing become a shared experience.

What makes group therapy effective?

One of the most powerful aspects of group therapy is coming to the realization that you are not alone. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, addiction, relationship difficulties, etc., hearing others speak about similar experiences can be incredibly validating. It can lessen the shame and stigma often associated with mental health issues while creating a sense of belonging that can become so deeply comforting. In this supportive environment, participants not only receive insights from the therapist but also benefit from the perspectives of their peers. The group dynamic encourages empathy, emotional honesty, and a genuine sense of community. Over time, each member’s perspective can begin to shift as they view themselves not solely as individuals in pain, but as part of a greater whole. Group therapy can be incredibly effective because it provides a safe space with a moderator to interact and be vulnerable with others.

What’s the therapist’s role in a group?

In group therapy, the therapist(s) serves as both a facilitator and guide. They help structure the sessions, encourage respectful dialogue, and ensure that every voice is heard. Their goal is to maintain a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and growing.

Sessions typically include open discussions, structured exercises, and shared reflections. Through these, individuals can explore their thoughts and emotions, recognize patterns in their behavior, and learn about new ways to cope (with the advantage of real-time feedback from others who “get it”).

How would group therapy help me grow?

The group setting functions like a mirror. As you listen to others, you may recognize parts of your own story reflected back at you — often in ways that bring fresh insight or clarity. You can practice relating to others, expressing your feelings, and developing healthier communication habits in a safe and supportive space. Not only are you able to receive support in group therapy, you are also able to give support to others, which can lead to personal growth all on its own.

Group members often set personal goals and check in on their progress. This built-in accountability — combined with the encouragement of the group — can be incredibly motivating. It can transform therapy from a solo endeavor into a shared mission in which everyone contributes to one another’s growth.

Group Therapy vs. Individual Therapy

Both group and individual therapy have their strengths.

Individual therapy:

  • Focuses entirely on you
  • Sessions are tailored to your specific needs
  • Offers a space for deep self-exploration
  • Is suited for working through complex personal issues in private

Group therapy (offers something different but equally valuable) because:

  • Learning from others
  • Peer support and able to give support to peers
  • Realization that healing doesn’t have to be a solitary journey

For many, a blend of both approaches works best. Group therapy provides the relational experience and individual sessions offer personalized support. A combination of both group and individual therapy can help you shape a comprehensive path towards emotional well-being.

……………………..

Group therapy is more than just a therapeutic technique — it’s an invitation for connection. It’s a space where people come as they are, and through shared struggle and mutual support, can begin to heal. If you have ever felt isolated in your mental health journey or longed for a deeper sense of connection and understanding, group therapy may be exactly what you’re missing.

You don’t have to do this alone and you don’t have to have it all figured out. The first step is simply reaching out. Joining a therapy group could be the first step toward realizing you’re not alone—and that healing, growth, and connection are all possible together
